The Tramp House

This house was built C. 1876 by order of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders to provide temporary refuge for homeless wanderers of the post-civil war depression years.

Moved to this site in 1988 by the Harding Township Historical Society, the structure originally stood on land now in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and formerly the farm of Joseph Hilbert, overseer of the poor for Passaic Township.

Marker is at the intersection of Village Road and Millbrook Road, on the right when traveling east on Village Road.
