The Oldest Wooden School House in the U.S.

The small clapboard building located near the historic gates of St. Augustine is widely believed to be "the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse in the U.S." Built in the early 18th century while Florida was under Spanish rule, the schoolhouse is constructed of red cedar and cypress, joined together with wooden pegs and handmade nails.

Visitors to the schoolhouse can view an exhibit that includes copies of the textbooks used by students more than two centuries ago, along with cooking utensils like those used by the schoolmaster's wife in the detached kitchen behind the schoolhouse.
