The Octagon House
An example of the "Gravel Wall and Octagon Mode of Building" popularized by Orso S. Fowler in the 1850's, noted for its use of building material, plan of rooms and adaptability to light and ventilation. Built 1855-60 by John Blauvelt, Jr.,an adherent of this style, it was his home until 1882. Later owners were Garret Hering, Jules Schwenker and George Huff, all of whom served as Mayors of Montvale.
Marker is at the intersection of West Grand Avenue and Railroad Avenue, on the left when traveling east on West Grand Avenue.
