St. Valentine's Day Massacre Site
This address was once home to the SMC Cartage Company, site of one of the most infamous gangland killings in American history.
On February 14th 1929, seven men associated with Bugs Moran's North Side Gang were murdered by gunmen hired by Al Capone and his rival South Side Gang.
The target of the bloody massacre is believed to have been Bugs Moran himself but he arrived late to the garage. It is thought that the gunmen mistook one of the murder victims for Moran.
The murders were part of an ongoing feud between the two major crime families in Chicago over control of the lucrative bootlegging industry.
The public outcry over the massacre led directly to an increased interest in organized crime activity in Chicago and resulted in the massive FBI investigation that eventually led to the arrest and imprisonment of Al Capone.
