Snow Cap Drive-In
TThe Snow Cap Drive-In, located in Seligman, Arizona is a famous Route 66 restaurant located on a historic section of the "Mother Road."
Started in 1953, the restaurant was opened in response to the Route 66 tourist traffic. The town of Seligman was originally a trading post town and later became a Railroad stop headed for California, but it was the opening of U.S. 66 that led to an influx of travelers to this small town.
Operated for almost fifty years by Juan Delgadillo, the Snow Cap is an expression of the wacky tourism that once entertained travelers on Route 66. With its flashy exterior of multicolored cars and signs, it reflects the jokester personality of Juan, and the pranks continue with the Delgadillo family who continues to manage the restaurant.
In the fall of 1978 the I-40 interstate bypassed Seligman, leaving this town, like many other Route 66 towns, nearly abandoned. Determined to keep their businesses alive, Juan and Angel Delgadillo helped form the Historic Route 66 Association in Arizona.
The Snow Cap displays the history of Route 66 showcasing black and white photos taken during the depression to the musical contributions of Woody Guthrie. This restaurant, still in operation, has become essential to the memory of Route 66 and the history of the migration of people from the East out West.
