Sandia Peak and Tramway
Located on the slopes of the Sandia Mountains overlooking Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Sandia Peak Tramway is one of the world's longest passenger tramways. Robert Nordhaus, a founder and owner of the Sandia Peak Ski Company, chose to construct the tramway after experiencing similar systems while vacationing in Europe.
Started in 1964, Bell Engineering, a Swiss firm with almost eighty years of experience, built the nearly three mile system which they contended was "one of the most challenging endeavors" in their long history.
Completed in 1966, the tramway remained unchanged for the next two decades until the company installed two new cars in honor of the its 20th Anniversary.
Making over 10,000 round trips up and down the mountain per year at an average speed of 12 miles per hour, riders experience birds-eye views of the City of Albuquerque, neighboring mountain ranges, and the expansive vistas of New Mexico's "land of enchantment."
