Sept. 20, 1863, 1 P.M.
1st Division - Brig. Gen. James B. Steedman.
2nd Brigade, 2nd Division - Col. Daniel McCook.
—————————
On the morning of the 20th of September the Reserve Corps was in the vicinity of McAfee's church, 2 1/4 miles northeast of this point. Gen. Granger, about noon, judging by the firing that Gen. Thomas was hard pressed, marched in haste with Steedman's Division to his assistance, guided by the sound of the guns, and without orders. While passing this point at 1 o'clock, Forrest's Cavalry attacked his flank without delaying him. He deployed Whitaker's Brigade upon the high ground west of this road and drove the enemy's cavalry away from the Union hospital at Cloud Spring. He then sent back for McCook's Brigade and posting it on the next crest south of Cloud's and West of McDonald's, rapidly pressed on with the rest of his command to he vicinity of the Snodgrass House where he reported to Gen. Thomas.
Marker is on Old Lafayette Road north of Gilbert Drive, on the right when traveling south.
