Reconstruction and Renovation

The Lincoln tomb has undergone two reconstructions. The first, undertaken from 1899 to 1901, corrected a failing foundation. the structure was completely dismantled, new foundations were placed and the tomb was re-erected with an additional 15 feet added to the obelisk's height. In September 1901 President Lincoln's remains were placed in a new vault below the floor of the burial chamber. Interior renovations in 1930 and 1931 created decorative hallways leading to the burial chamber with its magnificent marble memorial stone.

Marker can be reached from the intersection of Monument Avenue and W. Oak Street.
