Olde Towne Corner Store

The “Chester Store”, now known as the Old Towne Corner Store was built in 1912 by George Olsen after he & his brothers subdivided the Olsen Ranch. It is one of the oldest buildings in Chester.

It was purchased by Sue & Harry Isbell in 1929. Bill Poyner was the proprietor in the 50’s & 60’s. It has been owned and run by Ed, Lois & Gary Lickiss since 1976.

Maude Gay, cousin to the Olsens, started the Post Office in 1908 & moved it here in 1912. It has been a library, insurance office, ice house & had the first gas pumps in Chester. Rumor has it that some bootleg liquor may have passed thru these doors in the good old days. It was and remains a hub of activity in Olde Towne.

Marker is at the intersection of Main Street (California Route 36) and First Avenue on Main Street.
