National Historical Landmark- Owl's Nest (Edward Eggleston Estate)

Eggleston, one of America's earliest realistic novelists, was among the first to tap the literary potential of the country's frontier experience.

He grew up along the Ohio River and became a Methodist circuit rider in Minnesota. He recalled his experiences in his novel, The Circuit Rider which appeared first in serial form in 1873-1874.

After serving from 1874 to 1879 as a Unitarian pastor, he retired to Owl's Nest to devote his full attention to writing. He built first a library and then a stone house on this estate, where he died in 1902.
