Maison Seignouret
The beautiful home located at 530 Royal Street is named in honor of its original owner Francois Seignouret.
Francois moved to New Orleans from Bordeaux France sometime prior to 1814. Despite his elevated social status, Francois is listed as a member of the "Batallion de Orleans" that aided Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.
Francois settled into the city as a merchant of imported wines and spirits from his native France and became widely known for his fine wares.
He constructed the Maison Seignouret in 1816 and used it not only as a residence but also his trade shop. The construction was a typical style for the day except for an additional balcony between the first and second floor used to display and store wine and spirit casks.
The interior courtyard of the building was designed with special attention to beauty and style and has been a common inspiration for artists and photographers throughout the buildings lifespan.
Despite his reputation as a merchant, Francois also had a talent for furniture design, and soon opened a high quality studio within his home's courtyard. Seignouret style furniture, made primarily from exotic hardwoods, soon became extremely popular among the elite and items became highly sought after.
Francois Seignouret died in his native France and the business passed to his younger brother. Various other furniture and wine importers occupied the building until it was converted entirely to a private residence in 1900.
