E 1st US Artillery from Dec 1850 through May 1851 ? Resigned commission to become professor at Virginia Military Institute ? Entered Confederate service in 1861 at the outbreak of the War Between the States ? Acclaimed for his actions at the Battles of First Manassas, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.

Gen. Jackson died at Guiney's Station, Virginia of pneumonia and complications resulting from wounds received during the Battle of Chancellorsville.His last words were...
"Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."
