Lamb Expands the Fort, 1862-1865

Col. William Lamb took command on July 4, 1862. For two years over 1,000 soldiers, slaves, and free blacks worked six days a week.

J.A. McMillan, a soldier at Fort Fisher, wrote: “They everlastingly make us work. … We work nine hours these hot days.”
