John Gayle

Governor 1831 - 1835

He extended state laws into Indian lands and actively encouraged illegal white settlement there. A treaty with the Creek Indians in 1832 forced them to leave the state and resulted in nine new counties in east Alabama. Their "Trail of Tears" took the Indians through Tuscaloosa.

Marker is on 6th Street west of 28th Avenue, on the right.
