Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park and Museum
Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore were murdered in their home in Mims when a bomb exploded under their bedroom on Christmas night, 1951--their 25th wedding anniversary. It was the first killing of a prominent civil rights leader, and is believed to be the spark that ignited the American civil rights movement.
Encompassing over 12 acres, the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park presents a unique setting to explore the intersection of history, art and culture. The park grounds are a great place to picnic in a peaceful environment and a reminder of the Moore's love of country living in their citrus grove. Visitors can explore the Replica Home that shows how the Moore family lived their daily lives. Twin reflecting pools and a continuous flowing fountain symbolize the Moore's lives and the flow of knowledge from generation to generation.
The museum timeline highlights significant developments in the history of the pre-Civil Rights movement and why the Moores were an integral part of that progress. The conference center is used for lectures, family reunions, and a various other activities that include being a movie theater. Also available are historical tours, scavenger hunts, festivals and many other activities.
