First Skyscraper
This massive four-story building is locally referred to as "The First Skyscraper" and also "Sieur George's House" because of its reference in the famous George Washington Cable story of the same name.
The building was constructed around 1811 and was the first four-story building in New Orleans, eventually leading to its popular nickname. Although extraordinary large for its time, the building is still constructed in the popular French urban style. The building is constructed of cypress and red-clay brick and covered with stucco. Iron ornamentation was added throughout its long-lifetime.
The home was owned by a series of prominent residents during the 19th century, most notably, the family of prominent physician, Dr. Yves Le Monier between 1811 and 1860. Dr. Le Monier's third story parlor is considered by many to be the most beautiful room within the French Quarter, affording views of the entire district. If one looks carefully, they can see his initials, Y.L.M., wrought into the iron-work balcony.
