The Crystal Icehouse served as an important part of Pensacola's Eastside Neighborhood. Following completion of the structure in 1932, the Icehouse served Pensacola households up until the 1950's.

In 1983, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites. In 2007, the Pensacola News Journal named the Crystal Icehouse one of the "Seven Wonders of Pensacola."
