David Davis swapped for the farm just east of here with Normal's founder Jesse Fell. Davis forgiving Fell's debts. Judge Davis was a friend of attorney Abraham Lincoln and the two of them rode the 8th Judicial circuit together, holding court from Danville to Metamora and from Shelbyvbille to Bloomington. When Lincoln ran for President in 1860, Judge Davis was his campaign manager,Fell among his closest advisors. President Lincoln appointed Davis to the United States Supreme Court in 1862. In 1876 Justice Davis resigned from the high court to fill Illinois's vacant U.S. Senate seat, where he served another six years, the last of them as President Pro Tem.His wife Sarah, meanwhile, maintained the residence in Bloomington, raising a family and overseeing the building of the couple's showplace home in 1872, then clearly visible from here,along the Illinois Central Railroad.
