Once crowded with tenement buildings filled with immigrants, Allen street was also a notorious Red Light District.In its heyday during the early 20th century, Allen street served as a battleground between rival Lower East Side gangs. In 1905, a tenement building along Allen street caught fire, leading to the death of 20 of its residents.
