18th Century French Mortar
Cast in France of high bronze alloy, circa 1725, the sunburst design was the official crest of Louis XV. This 10 inch mortar was sent to America as part of the French support of the American Revolution. It saw service at the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia in October, 1781, where French artillerymen successfully employed it to bombard the British defences.
